Automation of initial plant layout (Heritage AVEVA ID: 17)

My idea is to (partially) automate plant layout at the FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) stage, giving engineers a cost-optimised layout (or choice of layouts) of the major known components.

Problem Statement

When doing FEED the layout (or choice of layouts) is generated manually by engineers moving components around until it looks right – perhaps comparing costs once done. This is slow (and therefore costly) and also unlikely to produce an optimal solution – it seems an ideal problem for optimisation (/learning) algorithms to give at the very least a sensible first stab (or sensible set of choices) from which an engineer can choose from/tweak further. (Note there seems little commercially available that does this so would potentially give Aveva a competitive advantage, and if customers use our FEED they are more likely to use our full detailed design solutions).

(Aside: this could also potentially demo well which salesy types might like)
