Expansion of point description field string length

SE PA WWW previously modified database schema and structure now with binary release modifications tot he database structure are limited. Support for modifying existing types including changing string length is not supported.

SE PA WWW typically modifies the description field to be 128 characters in length. Requesting an enhancement to extend this field size.

    The estimate for this came in very high due to the potential risk of regression. At this time, we cannot commit to this feature and would suggest creating a second longer field for HMI display purposes, and continue to use the truncated shorter field for the alarms and events.

    Customer: Portland Water Bureau (PWB)

    PWB's descriptions are more verbose, for example: "VERNON: Generator Tripped (due to Emergency Stop Pushbutton, High......."

    The description is truncated in the Alarm Summary to a 48 character string.

    They don't show description in the Event Summary, but looks like the description field in the database is varchar(128). This looks to be the baseline field length, as seen in ES2021.

    The control panels were modified to show 128 character descriptions. The description text was made to be two lines, with a small scrollbar on the right, to allow scrolling down if the word-wrapped description string takes up more than the two lines.

    A new custom field could potentially be used, however, we would need a way to have its contents be shown in the alarm summary and event summary records.

    What kind of information is being stored in description? IS the full 128 characters shown on the alarm summary? IF not, to what should it be truncated? Ditto for event summary.

    Were the control panels modified to show 128 characters? How was it made to fit?

    Would some of this information be better suited in a new custom field?

    This would be considered for ES2023
