Dnaswana with DALPrompter

Big Picture User Experience

Enable SCADA Administrator to use a centralized server to monitor and troubleshoot communications on multiple systems.

Detailed Description

To enhance security and reduce server resources, customers typically install monitoring and management tools on a central server instead of duplicating servers and tools across every system. This requires that such tools communicate with remote systems from a single location. For this purpose, the Software Protocol Analyzer (SWANA) will be enhanced so it can connect to remote systems via the Data Access Layer selector. The systems available for selection will be restricted to those specified in the DAL configuration module. With this update, users will be able to monitor various systems—such as Primary and Backup systems, Dual partner configurations, or Split RealTime architectures—all from one place within the domain. SWANA will allow access to any system in the domain. Although there is a TCP/IP workaround, it is less efficient because updating the TCP/IP configuration file for each target system change is cumbersome.

Business Value

Enabling customer to install leaner system topology and hardening their servers for purpose.

Acceptance Criteria

  • When launching SWANA, the application shall prompt the user a DAL prompter for the user to select the system to connect to.

  • The DAL Promoter shall utilize the same DAL configuration as defined on the local computer.

Out of Scope

None Identified

Assumptions

The system selection would be limited to the DAL Configuration capabilities.

Dependencies

None Identified

Upgradability

No issue or concerns have been identified.

PSR - Performance, Scalability, Resilience

Since this is not a mission-critical monitoring tool, its performance will be constrained by the network bandwidth available between systems. Customers currently have the ability to configure TCP/IP overrides for remote system monitoring, and this enhancement will follow the same approach.

NFR - Non-Functional Requirements

none identified.

Mock-up / Supporting Information

None identified

Expectation

On a launch of SWANA the user can select which system SWANA should connect to monitor communication.
The expectation is that SWANA will be capable to connect to the same systems as HMI on the given computer. Meaning utilizing the configured DAL prompter.
